Youth Day celebration of a different kind

ALEXANDRA -– The outbreak of Covid-19 has sparked a different way of celebrating Youth Day.

The June 16 1976 Student Uprisings which has become known as Youth Day, will be celebrated differently in Alexandra this year due to the outbreak of the global pandemic, Covid-19.

The celebration will be known as Youth Against Covid-19 Poetic Challenge and will be hosted by the Alexandra Heritage Centre and Museum on the corner of 7th Avenue and Richard Baloyi Street in association with the City of Johannesburg.

The museum’s education officer Percy Ndaba has urged those between the ages of five and 35 years to participate in the celebration by submitting their poems of not more than 100 words on Covid-19, and how it affects them and the community at large and how this can be prevented.

Ndaba said the poems must be sent in video format (MP3/MP4) and should not exceed one minute (60 seconds) and be submitted, along with name and surname to 065 997 2149 or via Facebook Messenger.

The competition closes on 15 June at 4pm. All entrants will be showcased on the City of Joburg’s cultural and social media platforms with the top three being certificated for their outstanding poetic works.
