Why celebrate Freedom Day?

South Africa and its diverse people have struggled through many things … racial violence, territorial conflict and Apartheid to name a few. Which is exactly why each and every South African should celebrate Freedom Day on April 27.

On April 27, 1994, South Africans of all races took part in the country’s first democratic, non-racial national elections, where everyone of the voting age of over 18 was allowed to cast their vote in a bid to change the country.

Today it is known as Freedom Day and South Africans celebrate it to mark the liberation of the country and its rise out of the terrible era called Apartheid.

But why celebrate it?

Freedom Day reminds each and every South African, home or abroad, that the country’s freedom is thanks to its people. South Africans must be continuously vigilant to fight corruption and the disintegration of the Freedom Struggle and continue to work towards wiping out the legacy of racism and inequality.
