Twitter reacts to Tembisa, Alex, Ivory Park, Zandspruit not adhering to lockdown rules

JOBURG – By late this afternoon, the Alexandra police and the South African National Defence Force reportedly dispersed the crowds in Alexandra.

The South African lockdown started at midnight last night (26 March) and already on day one, some residents did not adhere to the lockdown rules, as set out by the government.

Among those not complying were community members in Tembisa, Alex, Ivory Park and Zandspruit.

Many took to Twitter to share their frustrations, thoughts and photos of these areas.

Alex Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha said there was visible policing on the streets. “Patrolling officers are trying to get those loitering around back into their homes,” said Mbatha who added that most of them had to go to shops to stock up on food items. He was worried about the violation of the social distancing regulation.

The Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Mally Mokoena along with representatives of the City of Joburg visited the community of Zandspruit and found some residents drinking at an illegal drinking spot.

The City said in a tweet, “Officers from the City’s Public Safety immediately dispersed the crowd. While walking through the area, the MMC found a shop where the manager outlined the space meant for customers to stand while waiting to go in. The shop also allowed customers to enter only in small groups.”
