Coronavirus rule abusers remanded in custody

ALEXANDRA – Alex police's tough stance on Coronavirus nets 13 abusers

Thirteen people were arrested in Alexandra on 21 March for violating liquor-related regulations enacted to mitigate the coronavirus.

This according to Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha who emphasised police strictness in applying the regulations. “It’s serious and in the national interest for everyone to comply in order to mitigate the scourge which spares no one,” Mbatha said.

He implored transgressors to heed national advice and laws and stop risking their own and others’ lives.

Mbatha said the accused either were found in crowds above the allowed number, in taverns after prescribed operating hours or the taverns where unregistered. “One of them paid a R1 500 and is due in court while others who failed to pay bail were remanded in custody pending court hearings.”

Mbatha advised that the lockdown will see even tougher action kick in and increased visibility by the police and the army manning strategic points and patrolling the streets to minimise human movement. “Only valid cases of emergency and gazetted critical staff movement will be permitted at this unprecedented time when government’s sole aim is to save lives.”

He advised those with funerals which can’t be postponed to seek police permission. “A limited number of only close relatives will be permitted to attend.

“In the process, they will be required to have sanitisers with them and adhere to social distance measures.

“The main aim is to protect each other.”

He concluded that the patrolling security members who aren’t immune to the virus will also abide by the regulations in their course of duty.
