Unexplained solar panels get men sentenced

ALEXANDRA – Solar panel thieves fail to account for 35 panels

Three men were each sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 18 months’ imprisonment or R8 000 fine for the possession of suspected stolen solar panels.

Jethro Mhlanga, Nkosi Nyoni and Nqobani Khumalo were arrested at night on 23 February after they had failed to prove ownership of 35 panels found in their motor vehicle.

They were linked with CCTV footage captured of people seen the same night at about 11.20pm getting into a place in Wynberg. They came out carrying boxes fitting the description of those containing the panels found in the accused’s Toyota Quantum. Police officers on patrol who stopped their vehicle at the intersection of Alfred Nzo and 8th avenues in Alex searched it and found the panels. They were arrested after the driver who failed to prove ownership of the panels said he had taken them from a home in Tembisa. The boxes were confiscated, vehicle was taken to Aeroton Police Pound and the men detained leading to their conviction.
