Alexandra motorists warned of coronavirus

ALEXANDRA – Road agency heeds Ramaphosa's call on corona.

Motorists from Alex and other regular users of the Bakwena N1 and N4 highways were alerted of precautionary measures awaiting them.

This following the presidential proclamation of the state of disaster due to the coronavirus. In a statement preceding the anticipated high traffic volumes over the Easter holidays, the roads authority said, “Bakwena assures the public of its preparedness and support of government’s efforts to contain the spread of the disease. Our greatest priority is the well-being, health and safety of our road users and employees.”

The authority has put in place stringent precautionary measures at toll plazas to curb the spread of the virus. “They include increased communication and awareness to employees, heightened health, sanitation and cleaning activities, and restricting access to only core staff at our plazas.”

This, the authority said, was done in compliance with guidelines from the Department of Health and the World Health Organization. “We have set out clear procedures to determine when employees need to self-isolate and we will provide the necessary support to enable prompt diagnoses.”

It said additional hand sanitisers would be available throughout the plazas for staff and would be used regularly when handling money, cards and interfacing with motorists. “Employees have been encouraged to minimise contact with others and vulnerable workers have been identified and assisted to minimise the risk of infection.”

Also, the authority encouraged motorists and the public in general to take good care of their health, increase their intake of vitamin C and practise good hygiene. It advised anyone to self-quarantine for 14 days when they noticed flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose and shortness of breath, and to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
