Celebrating Human Rights Day now more than ever – it’s time to stand together

With the nation and the world in uncertainty due to Covid-19, economic challenges in South Africa as we slipped into recession early in March.  The coronavirus worsening the situation as markets and currency plunge, this Human Rights Day on 21 March with tough times it is time to stand together.

Human Rights Day on 21 March , acts as a reminder of the sacrifices made by activists, ordinary South Africans to ensure all citizens have the right to equality, human dignity, social freedom and education. But the coronavirus pandemic has placed a stark reminder of how far we still have to go, to give all South Africans the basic rights that are preserved in the Constitution.

Nation Builder is an initiative started by Mergon initiative and the Mergon Group who has pledged R5 million for an emergency fund for NPOs to assist them during this tough period.

Many businesses and non-profit organisations are going to struggle with donations and making a profit as we are advised to practise social distancing.

They have also encouraged business and individuals to follow suit, Keri-Leigh Paschal, executive trustee of Nation Builder said, “It’s time for us, as South Africans, to mobilise as citizens. Right now, South Africa’s most vulnerable people need every bit of support they can get. It’s perfectly understandable that we want to focus on is our own survival – but it’s vital that all of us, businesses and individuals alike, stand together, and make any contribution we can to get our nation through this crisis. ”
