Matriculants supported by the Alexandra Education Committee surpassed the organisation’s expectations with its sterling 2019 matric results.

This is according to the director of the organisation Paul Cannon.

“We had set a 60 per cent average pass mark and they didn’t disappoint through the 100 per cent pass rate by all 41 matric candidates we supported throughout the year,” Cannon said.

Two learners achieved five distinctions each, two attained three each and six earned two each. All in all, there were 33 bachelor’s degree passes. varsity entries.

The cherry on the cake was the two top achievers, Nicholas Banda who will study medicine at the University of Stellenbosch and Itumeleng Moyaha who will tackle actuarial science at Wits.

Sydney Seolonyane, the organisation’s career counsellor said, “The future is bright for these children and it means a lot to the committee, their families, the community and country.” He added that they lowered the 2020 intake to include 52 Grade 7 learners to increase the number of beneficiaries of the programme to 184. The children are selected through a partnership with Alex schools based on performance and potential. “They are transferred to good schools outside the township to enhance their education together with after-school and weekend tutorials we offer them at Waverley Girls High School,” Seolonyane said.

The support includes school fees, uniforms, the provision of meals and food parcels for home consumption, eye tests, home visits to attend to their psychosocial needs and transport.
