Joyrider nabbed for vehicle fraud

ALEXANDRA – Metro cops spoil car fraudster's fun.

A 21-year-old youth who had a short-lived joyride in a dubiously acquired motor vehicle received a wholly suspended five-year sentence.

The sentence for which he is not to commit a similar offence in the next five years was passed by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Phila Vulindlela of Berea. He admitted to defrauding a motor vehicle dealership in Midrand with a Ford Focus in September last year.

He submitted a loan application for the vehicle with a copy of his driver’s licence and fake payslip and bank statements. He took possession of the vehicle after the application was approved.

His jaunt ended shortly after when the Joburg Metro Police alerted to the wanted vehicle after the approval was queried, nabbed while driving in it alone in inner Joburg.

He implicated an accomplice to the scheme who was also arrested but was acquitted for lack of evidence while he was denied bail. The vehicle was returned to the dealership while he was sentenced.
