There is a high chance of load-shedding on the weekend

JOBURG – Eskom said there are will continue to explore the pilot programme of providing loadshedding discontinuation during the morning and evening traffic rush hours in the week but not today.

In a released statement, the ailing power utility said there was a high possibility that load-shedding could extend into the weekend.
Eskom added that this was due to the shortage of capacity and even higher demand for electricity.
Eskom said there was an increased possibility of load-shedding over the next 18 months to allow for the restoration of its ageing plants.

“Customers are also advised that any additional shifts in the system may require a change in the load-shedding stage. We, therefore, request customers to use electricity sparingly and to reduce demand during this period of load-shedding,” said the power utility.
Eskom has also said that even though their pilot programme was unsuccessful, they would continue to explore the pilot programme of providing load-shedding discontinuation during the morning and evening traffic rush hours in the week. However, this was not possible today (6 February) owing to the available generating capacity and the need to replenish emergency reserves.

“Unplanned outages or breakdowns were at 11 567MW as at 6am this morning. Critical maintenance is being done on units that are currently on planned outages as well as some of those on unplanned outages to ensure a timeous return to service.”

To assist Eskom in reducing the stage of loadshedding, we appeal to customers to continue to use electricity sparingly:
  • Set air-conditioners’ average temperature at 23ºC
  • Switch off your geysers over peak periods
  • Use the cold water tap rather than using the geyser every time
  • Set your swimming pool pump cycle to run twice a day, three hours at a time
  • At the end of the day, turn off computers, copiers, printers and fax machines at the switch.
Eskom also appeals to customers to revisit their load-shedding schedules on the Eskom or local municipal websites, depending on their electricity supplier, to review amendments.
