Top achiever urges learners to keep up a positive attitude and always be helpful towards others

SANDRINGHAM – Emeh recalled the days when she couldn't go to bed because of the school work she had to finish.

Sandringham High School 2019 matric top achiever Jenifer Emeh said she was surprised by her achievement though she was expecting it.

The aspiring pharmacist achieved a stunning six distinctions in English, mathematics, life orientation, life sciences, information technology and physical science, flying her school’s flag above half-mast.

Jenifer recalled the nights when she couldn’t go to bed because of the school work she had to finish.

“The journey was an exhilarating experience for me,” she said.

“I was anxious and nervous at first and was in tears after I found out but filled with happiness and a sense of accomplishment. Getting six distinctions was a surprise, yet expected, because I know I have been working hard the whole year.

“My year was filled with a lot of different struggles and benefits. I remember the days that I couldn’t sleep, staying up all night to finish assignments and study, trying to finish ahead of time to get other work done, it was a roller coaster of a year. But then getting backtest results and feeling better and thinking that it was all worth it.”

Her advice to future matric learners was that they must stay focused and find the right friends. “Try to make use of the time you have because you won’t get it back. Even if its only five minutes, take it to solve one problem or read a paragraph, it all helps… Keep up a positive attitude and always be helpful towards others. You learn that way.”

Jenifer is planning to study medicine or pharmacy at the University of Witwatersrand.
