ALEXANDRA – It's Not only the football fraternity lost that had lost the credible leader but the entire region of the City of Johannesburg, the province and the nation.

Scores of people including high profile politicians, sports administrators and academics from all corners of the province converged on Sankopano Community Centre to bid farewell to fallen community builder and activist, Moses Selolo.

Selolo (76) who played a significant role in sports and community development in Alexandra and other surrounding areas passed away on 10 January this year after a short illness.

Addressing mourners at the memorial service, the newly elected Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg and chairperson of the ANC in the Johannesburg Region, Geoff Makhubo described Selolo as the glue that kept the community together through his unique style of leadership that was characterised by a high level of diplomacy.

“We are here today to pay tribute to the giant of community development and a sports administration titan,” he said. “Through sports, Ntate Selolo kept the community united and glued together. We all know that without sport which keeps our youth away from social ills, there will be no future leaders. Sport plays a very critical role in community building and cements social cohesion.”

Makhubo also urged mourners to learn from Selolo who had no social boundaries.

“It’s not only the football fraternity that has lost a credible leader but the entire region of the city of Johannesburg, the province and the nation. We need more community members like Bra Moss. We hope that more Bra Moss’s will rise because he had mentored many people that can take on the baton.”

Speaking on behalf of Lombardy West and Bramley View Residents Association (Lowebra) that Selolo had worked with as a community member, Pule Khanye said Selolo had taught him a number of things.

“Today we are celebrating a man who adopted me as his elder son though I was an old man. Bra Selolo taught me how to live with people from a background different to mine. When he arrived in Bramley View, he changed Lowebra completely and made it what it is today. It’s not only his family that has lost a father but the entire Lowebra community,” Khanye said.
