Gap year for budding artist

ALEXANDRA – Budding artist takes her time towards her goal.

Failure to obtain the desired results in the first attempt is not a reflection of one’s limitation but a lesson on how to do better in the next try.

These wise words will hopefully resonate well with many languishing in misery after not achieving high pass marks in matric, and not getting the usual pats on the back or hugs.

Budding artist Palesa Dikobe Sedibeng said this while reflecting on her future after attaining a diploma entry pass in matric at Sandringham High School.

“It is not the end of the world but time to reflect, dust-up and carry on with life,” she said disclosing that she will take a gap year in which she will rewrite maths to enable her entry to tertiary education to pursue her passion for art.

Her love is impression art and she also wants to teach the subject. “Interestingly no one in Region E obtained a distinction in visual art,” she said indicating the creativity challenge posed to many by the subject and in which she missed achieving a distinction by two per cent.

“The interest in the field helps in my self-expression. The images I draw are a mix of textures and expose my feelings, experiences at that moment and go beyond the simplicity of the image. This helps the cunning observer to understand me.”

She added her gap year won’t be spent lazing around. “Repeating a subject won’t be my first time and will strengthen me as I work towards my goal.

“It will keep me busy so that I don’t jeopardise my chance at varsity entry to do what I like best.”

She urged the disillusioned to rethink. “Write down your life goal and work towards it regardless of the hurdles and you will overcome. Pray, ask for help from God and make him your best friend.”

Palesa will also waitress and mix cocktails, her other favourite pastimes she enjoys at her uncle’s Siga Restaurant next to Altrec Sports Complex, East Bank. “Just like painting, cocktail mixing is also an art form that requires creativity to come up with a textured mix of drinks.”

Some of her paintings adorn the restaurant adding to its ambience.
