Be compassionate always with sick relatives

ALEXANDRA – Don't bring the sick just to go party – Hospice.

The Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre is concerned about residents wanting to dump ailing relatives at the facility on holidays.

This concern featured in Alex News in the past was repeated by centre manager Grace Marutlulle after the recent festive season. “Three families approached us for space to keep their relatives so that they could go on holiday or attend fun events elsewhere or at the home without the sick relative,” a distraught Marutlulle said, urging for compassion by those with ailing relatives.

She added that it was unacceptable to want them away just so that they can enjoy themselves in the absence of the sick relative. She also said that it was most disturbing because some of those who did so, relied on the ailing relative’s grant which they could possibly use to fund their fun time.

She urged the relatives to always be there for their ailing family member, particularly in their last days when they needed all emotional support and may want to share concerns they have before they depart.

She further advised the families to rather engage care workers at the ailing person’s familiar environment and pay for the services through the person’s grant. “It is solely for their care and upkeep and has been determined and sanctioned by a district surgeon.”
