Be more civil when celebrating

ALEXANDRA - The tyre burning culture is discouraged.

Alexandra residents were urged to act more civilly and respect and protect public facilities when conducting celebrations.

This was said by the township’s philanthropist Linda Twala in the aftermath of the festive season and particularly the New Year celebration. Twala said this after he and a group of youths collected four truck loads of old tyres from those who intended to burn them on the streets.

He said the people who burnt tyres collected them from mechanics and tyre fitment operators and burnt them on the streets as part of a long-standing culture which was dangerous to public safety.

“The government should educate the residents against the danger and destruction of the roads by burning tyres,” he said.

“It should be discouraged as it melts roads and causes potholes.”

He added that deaths have also been reported when ambulances and the police have been prevented from accessing those who needed to be taken to hospitals. Twala urged the revelers in future to conduct their celebrations at the nearby Innes Free park or other designated public spaces. The collected tyres were taken to a Pikitup collection depot and the Metro police.

He further urged against using fireworks during celebrations. “They are dangerous when used in crowded spaces and can damage the eyes of particularly children who would are tempted to play with them.”

Twala said the loud bangs also caused trauma to animals.
