Suspended sentence for man on assault GBH charge

ALEXANDRA – Wife's absence sends man berserk, assaulting relatives

A man charged for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment which was wholly suspended for five years.

Jeffrey Gwayi (48) was charged in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for stabbing his sister-in-law in the head, breast and hands and for assaulting his mother-in-law who he threw a heater at. The accused who stays with the family at their 15th Avenue home was drunk when he went berserk at about 1am on 24 August after he found his wife absent at home and no one could tell him of her whereabouts.

He went to one of her friends looking for her and threatened to assault the friend and threatened to kill his wife and their children.

In mitigation, his apology was accepted by the victims.

The wife who stayed away overnight after being alerted of the accused’s ranting and threats to her, returned the following morning to find the injured victims and Gwayi was arrested.

He apparently had agreed when she asked to visit a friend in the morning on the day of the incident.
