Former Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba‘s parting words to Jozi residents were, “I would have loved to finish my term as mayor, but politics is very brutal.”
He said this on 27 November, the last day of his premature politically-driven departure while visiting the Joburg Development Agency (JDA) where he commended women for leading big construction projects.
In a statement Mashaba said, “It really warms my heart to see women occupying spaces that were previously occupied only by men. I would like to thank JDA for empowering and giving them the opportunity to showcase their wonderful work.”
He and Reuben Masango, MMC for Development Planning also unveiled two plaques at the R72-million award-winning Westbury Transformation Development Centre and the Brixton Social Cluster. Phase two of the projects will resume next year.
They also visited Selby Rapid Bus Transport Hub, Kazerne Intermodal Transport Facility and Gandhi Square East precinct where Masango commended JDA for restoring the dignity of residents through the facilities. “When we took over from the previous administration, we committed to bring tangible and real change, and that’s what we are doing. The facilities are yours and your responsibility to care for them.”
Mashaba thanked stakeholders for supporting his short-lived tenure. “Everything I accomplished was because of your unwavering support, dedication and hard work.”
He also expressed gratitude to contractors for making a difference in communities by also donating school shoes to disadvantaged children, employing locals and working with small, medium and micro-enterprises.
Mashaba concluded that he would go on holiday, read books and play golf while pondering his next move.
