Police warn stokvels

ALEXANDRA – Beware criminals want a share of your December pay, bonus

Alex residents who are employed were advised to be extra cautious with their December paycheques and bonuses as criminals also want part of it.

This as the festive season fever gains traction, excitement takes over and residents’ guard is lowered when enjoying this once a year moment of merriment.

“Like in all other places, excitement brings along laxity in general security as people tend to move freely, some with lots of money in their possession,” Alex Police Station Captain Stephen Malatji said urging for extra vigilance. “It’s when criminals also take advantage.”

He urged, in particular, Stokvel members not to keep repeating the mistake of withdrawing cash dividends from banks for distribution to members. “It’s a risk to the lives of those tasked withdrawing the money as some among the members are linked to criminals who they will tip to rob them. “Be wary of those who insist on cash dividends as the are the likely culprits,” he said urging that the money be deposited into the members’ bank accounts.

“Those who still insist should then be given their money in the bank so that they can be robbed.”

He advised similarly when grocery shopping for a group. “Transfer the money directly into the wholesale or shop’s banking account.”
