City rolls out the red carpet for EU diplomats

City of Johannesburg executive mayor councillor Herman Mashaba hosted a high-level delegation of ambassadors from European countries at council chambers in Braamfontein.

The outgoing mayor Mashaba was flanked by the speaker of the Council Vasco da Gama and several members of the mayoral committee as he led the discussions around the City’s transport system and maintaining good results with the European Union (EU).

He shared plans and ideas that would be beneficial for Johannesburg residents. Mashaba emphasised the importance of building and maintaining good relations with the EU to develop better opportunities to empower South Africans.

“The basis for the relationship between South Africa and the EU is underpinned by the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement, whose major focus is development aid and cooperation,” said Mashaba.

Councillor Da Gama said, “For relations between nations and economic groups to flourish, we have increasingly seen the need for responsible agendas, which account for local needs for global crises and for deeper integration between economic goal setting and human development.”

MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services councillor Nico de Jager elaborated more on the plans the City have about energy investment opportunities through finding the right technologies and systems that will reduce the cost of energy in order to accelerate infrastructure development and new technology adoption.

Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, MMC for Transport shared plans the City has for transport, “The vision of the transport department is to be a people-centred transport system that is transformed. We want fewer people to use cars and have an integrated public transport system.”
