A rape suspect is behind bars

BRAMLEY – The 30-year-old man who allegedly raped his victim in a cemetery in Setlwetla in Alexandra has been arrested.

Bramley police have arrested a man who allegedly raped a woman at the cemetery in Setlwetla at Alexandra Township on the evening of 8 September.

According to the police statement, the suspect was arrested by a detective from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.

Bramley Police Station spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi said the victim was walking alone at midnight when the suspect allegedly approached her and aggressively threatened to attack her, at the same time forcing her to walk with him.

The suspect then forced her into the cemetery yard where she was stripped of her clothes and he then allegedly raped her. “She was also robbed of her pair of sneakers and a cell phone. The victim later reported the matter to the police and the docket was then transferred to the police’s specialised unit (FCS) for further investigation,” he said.

He said the detective who was assigned to investigate the incident, traced the suspect to the Limpopo province where he was arrested and brought back to Johannesburg on 16 November. “He was detained at Bramley Police Station and he will face a rape charge.”

Mogodi said that Bramley police, through ongoing operations, continue to serve and protect its community. The police’s operations have resulted in arrests for fraud, shoplifting, common assaults, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving of motor vehicles, malicious damage to property and thefts.

The police also urged motorists to obey the rules of the road as the festive season approaches. “This weekend alone saw 18 drivers locked up during the operation Okae Molao which was conducted in the area. The drunk drivers must know that they are not only violating the laws of our country but, they also endanger the lives of other people.”
