The fight for women continues

SANDTON – National organisation SA Women Fight Back draft a petition to hold President Cyril Ramaphosa to account.

A wake-up call has gone out to South Africa that the fight for all women and victims of gender-based violence has not ended.

SA Women Fight Back, a national community of united women networking to bring about change and improvement, have drafted a petition to hold those in leadership accountable for their actions.

Just last month, the nation rallied together to take a stand against the on-going gender-based violence. “We took to the streets of Cape Town demanding to be heard and begging for our leaders help in our fight against gender-based violence. Every day our women and children are falling victim to gender-based violence, while our leaders sit behind closed doors distancing themselves from us, the women of South Africa,” said Taariya Reddy, the organisation’s head administrator for Gauteng and Johannesburg.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation, outlining 16 promises that would in the end address the problem. According to Reddy, it is almost two months later and no action has been taken by the administration to fulfil these promises. “Waiting for our leaders to keep to their promises while more of our women and children die at the hands of a ‘lawless country’, Thuma Mina Mr President?” she added.

The women’s organisation has drafted a petition which outlines all 16 promises made by Ramaphosa. “Our leaders need to be held accountable for what is happening in our country and we want action not words,” Reddy said.

In addition, the campaign #16Promises was launched and the organisation plans to host a nationwide gathering on Back Friday, 29 November. “Together we are stronger,” Reddy said. All are encouraged to wear black.

Venues to be announced beginning November on SA Women Fight Back Facebook page.
