Mashatile celebrates Tambo’s birthday with Alexandra senior citizens

ALEXANDRA – Paul Mashatile said Tambo dedicated most of his life serving the people with dedication and humility.

The treasurer general of the African National Congress (ANC) Paul Mashatile has appealed to both members and leaders of his party in their respective branches to be at the forefront in fighting poverty and helping the afflicted in Alexandra.

Mashatile, who brought a birthday cake decorated with ANC colours, celebrated Oliver Tambo’s 102nd birthday with the senior citizens in Joseph Gerald Old Age Home in Alexandra.

He said Tambo’s birthday celebrations this year coincided with the 50th year commemoration of the historic ANC’s Mogorogoro consultative conference held from 25 April to 1 May 1969 in Tanzania and it was important for the party to celebrate these historic events with the elders who contributed in the struggle against apartheid.

“The 27th of October is one of the most important days on the ANC’s calendar because on this day the party celebrates Oliver Tambo’s birthday. This year, the birthday celebration coincided with the 50th year commemoration of Mogorogoro Consultative Conference held in 1969. During that time Tambo was the president of the ANC.

“Tambo dedicated most of his life serving the people with dedication and humility. We came here today to continue where he left off and we will continue. The branch leadership and members of our movement should be at the forefront of helping local people. Branches of the party are the most important structures and they are in constant contact with the people on the ground unlike national leadership.”

Mashatile said different events to commemorate these historic times in the movement will be held in different regions and provinces until the end of this year.
