The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court issued a warrant of arrest for Mavis Mlalandle after she had failed to appear for hearing on 24 October.
Sixty-three-year-old Mlalandle is charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm after she allegedly poured boiling water on her 29-year-old daughter Sibongile Fredericks on 19 September at their 7th Avenue home.
She was granted medical bail after briefly appearing in court on 10 October. The arrest warrant was issued after prosecutor Nduduzo Jiyane said that the docket had not been presented to court again.
Speaking to Alex News outside the court, Fredericks said, “I am very pleased about my mother’s pending arrest. Spending nights in those cells may help her come to her senses and realise what she did was wrong.”
The complainant had to be treated at Alex Community Health Centre for burns on the lower legs and is recuperating at her boyfriend’s place.
There was seemingly drama during the mother’s first arrest after she was reported to Alexandra Police Station. Fredericks said, “She resisted arrest and eventually succumbed after the attending police called backup.
“At the station, she ‘feigned’ an ailment and collapsed and was resuscitated by paramedics who recommended that she seeks medical check-up.”
The incident was confirmed by Alex Police Station’s spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji who said the accused was released on a warning for medical reasons and ordered to appear in court to avoid a warrant of (re)arrest.
