Fun walk participants paint the infamous corner of Roosevelt Street and 4th Avenue with bright colours

ALEXANDRA – This year's fun walk aimed to raise crime awareness, encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and encourage peace among Alexandrians.

The infamous corner of Roosevelt Street and 4th Avenue in Alexandra turned into a spot of hope when scores of participants of a recent fun walk painted the area with bright colours of hope.

This was after the Maimane Alex Development Foundation and local youth non-profit organisation, Infinity Kracht recently hosted a second annual fun walk and aerobics session. Maimane Alex Development Foundation chairperson Maimane Phiri said, “This year’s fun walk was aimed at raising crime awareness, encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and to preach the gospel of peace among Alexandrians. It was also very important for us as the foundation to unite local people young and old and teach them to say no to the scourge of xenophobia. The past few months have been not easy for people and residents of Alexandra. The attacks on foreign people and their businesses left a painful scare to the history of our township.”

Spokesperson for the local youth non-profit organisation Infinity Kracht, Allen Xaba said the fun walk was an eye-opener for her, “The sync route used exposed me to some heritage sites in the township that was not aware of. I think this event is something that many of us young people in the township should embrace and participate in, not only for health purpose but also to get to know their township.

“Today I realised that I don’t know Alexandra and I would like to encourage other young people to take part in the next walk.”

Maimane added that the number of participants this year grew if compared with that of last year, “We had more than 800 people participating in this year’s fun walk compared to less than 400 participants in 2018. People are responding positively to this event that is aimed at uniting local people despite their backgrounds. We hope to have this number doubled again next year.”
