Rand Water says its under constraint due to the sweltering temperatures

JOBURG – The hot temperatures have increased water consumption which, according to Rand Water, has placed a significant amount of stress on their system.

Rand Water has appealed to consumers to use water sparingly as the water demands have increased in the past few weeks due to the consistently hot temperatures in Gauteng.

In a statement, media relations manager of Rand Water Justice Mohale said they are trying hard to manage the water requirements for their municipal and industrial customers in Gauteng, North West, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces. “However, the current combination of extremely high temperatures and virtually no rainfall within our area of supply has resulted in high water consumption levels, which is placing a significant amount of stress on our system,” the statement read.

Mohale said the normal number of equitable water supply is 4370MI/d but the recent consumption is 4900MI/d. He explained, “At 4370MI/d, everyone has supply and in the past few months we have been operating at this demand level. The current demand at 4900MI/d is 530MI/d more than what is required, this is unsustainable and will result in water interruptions.”

Rand Water is planning to implement stricter water restrictions across various areas to bring the demand down, aimed at stabilising the system.

Consumers have been advised to continue to use water wisely, Rand Water will be addressing the media on Friday, 25 October on how it intends to deal with the current water demand issues.
