JMPD joins forces with community-based organisations to raise road safety awareness

ALEXANDRA – Stakeholders descended on Pan Africa Mall Taxi Rank and busy intersections of the township to speak to the motorists, community members and street vendors about safety on the road.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and community-based non-profit organisations in Alexandra recently joined forces to conduct a safety awareness campaign to members of the community.

Stakeholders descended on Pan Africa Mall Taxi Rank and busy intersections of the township to speak to motorists, community members and street vendors about the importance of safety on the road.

Officer Lillian Dubadi of JMPD Outreach Programme Unit said the safety awareness campaign was sparked by recent cases of women being kidnapped while travelling in public transport. “October is Transport Month in South Africa. Today we, the JMPD and different community-based organisations, decided to hold this outreach programme to educate motorists and community members about safety on our roads. We want to preach a gospel of safety to all breathing beings. We had cases of women being kidnapped on their way home or work,” she said.

Dubadi added that the awareness campaign will be held continuously in and around Alexandra, not only during October.

Community activist and member of Men’s Forum Thabo Msuthwana said the main cause of road incidents in the area was people driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. “If we, the community members don’t get involve in fighting this scourge, people and our children will continue to die because of selfish people,” he said.

Dubadi urged community members and motorists to observe road rules and never get behind the wheel when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
