Hijacker traced to hospital bed

ALEXANDRA – Seven-year sentence compounds toy-gun hijacker's injury.

An Alex man who sustained a gunshot injury in an attempted armed hijacking was sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to seven years’ imprisonment.

Donovan Baburi (26) pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on the morning of 6 September.

The victim, who worked for a security company, was parking a vehicle next to Sankopano Community Centre, 12 Avenue when he saw Baburi and his accomplice looking at him. The pair approached the victim and pointed a gun at him as he exited the vehicle. A tussle ensued and the victim, who was armed, fired four shots and hit both assailants disabling one who fell to the ground and later died. Baburi was shot in the upper arm and fled with the firearm (found to be a toy gun) but dropped it.

Baburi was traced and arrested three days later at Charlotte Maxeke hospital where he was being treated under alias Simphiwe Ngcobo.
