Local councillor calls upon members of the public to lend a helping hand to the inferno victims

ALEXANDRA – Mavhona has urged the business community and members of the public to lend a helping hand to the victims of the fire.

Ward 75 councillor Sanie Mavhona said they will do everything they can as the city to help the recent victims of the fire to rebuild their lives.

This was after 37 families were displaced and lost their valuables when a wave of flames swept away their shacks on Second Avenue, Alexandra on 10 September.

In June last year, the same area also suffered a devastating fire incident in which dozens of shacks were destroyed and scores of people left homeless.

According to Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatjie, “A total number of 37 shacks were destroyed at no 132–136 Second Avenue, Alexandra at around 11am by a fire that was allegedly kindled by an unattended candle”.

“No one died or sustained injuries due to the inferno,” added Mavhona.

Mavhona has urged the business community and members of the public to lend a helping hand to the victims of the fire as most of them lost all their valuables.
