Applications for the 2020 intake of the Manhattan School of Music Hugh Masekela Scholarship at the are now open and will remain so until 1 December this year.
According to a statement released by Nomfundo Zondi on behalf of the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, all applications should be submitted directly to the Manhattan School of Music via their website www.msmnyc.edu.
Zondi said that, through this intervention, six qualifying students will receive a scholarship to attend one of the world’s most prestigious music conservatories – an institution where a young Masekela studied for four years. “The scholarship is aimed at young South African musical talent who face social, cultural and economic challenges, and nonetheless, have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing their craft.
“Throughout his life, Masekela was an exemplar of the principle that ‘the learning never ends’ – his curiosity, eagerness to learn and collaborate with others, was a hallmark of his appeal to audiences and fellow-creatives alike. Similarly, his lifelong obsession with showcasing and preserving African heritage, particularly through music, earned him a dedicated fanbase the world over.”
Zondi elaborated that the Hugh Masekela Heritage Scholarship represents an opportunity for South Africa’s future musical legends to receive training at one of the world’s most renowned musical institutions, a school that prides itself on a vibrant student body who come from more than 45 countries around the world.
“As a dedicated champion of African heritage, the scholarship is moving expression of the power of Masekela’s legacy and an apt tribute to his life’s work,” concluded Zondi.
