Alexandra Satma nominee pleads with the general public and music lovers to vote for her

ALEXANDRA– Semenya said she was confident that she will bring the award home this year.

The melodic voice of Alexandra has been once again nominated in this year’s South African Traditional Music Awards (Satmas).

Shantel Semenya (36) who started singing at a very young age has been in the music industry for more than a decade. She released her first solo album titled, Mme Waka, which means ‘my mother’ in 2017 as a dedication to her late mother.

“I was born in a musical family and from a very young age, I got involved in music at school and in the church. I lost my mother when I was only three years old and the only role model I had was my father who was a member of a music group which used to rehearse at home every weekend,” she said.

“I developed a love for music and started a gospel music group called The Cross which split up in 2002 when its members started their solo projects.”

She shared some of the challenges she had to face. “My journey to have this album released has not been an easy one. I had to knock on different doors to make this project a reality. My album which is titled, Mme Waka, has five tracks. I wrote the song Mme Waka as a tribute to my mother who I believe sees everything I’m doing. The track has been nominated for the best Afro-jazz song in this year’s Satmas that will be held in the North-West Province in September this year.”

Semenya said she was confident that she will bring the award home this year after the same song failed to get sufficient votes last year to win in the same category.

“I urge all Afro-jazz music lovers and the general public to vote for my song by sending an SMS to 49495 and vote for SATMA41,” she concluded.
