Residents urged to report corrupt police officers

ALEXANDRA – According to the Alexandra Police Station spokesperson, the meeting aims to bring together residents and the police to discuss ways to curb crime in the area.

Major General Max Mashe of the South African Police Service in Johannesburg has promised residents of Alexandra swift actions against corrupt police officers in the area and to attend to all grievances raised by the community.

Mashe responded to various issues raised by community members during a community gathering, Imbizo held at Sankopano Community Centre on 17 August this year. He urged community members to work hand in hand with the police to curb crime in the area.

According to Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatjie, Imbizo was aimed to bring residents and the police together to discuss ways to curb crime in the area.

Peter Malinga, an elderly resident of Alexandra and one of the leaders of the local property owners association Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association (Alpoa), accused police officers in Alexandra of being lazy and only go to work for a monthly cheque. “Our police are lazy and have no passion for their job. They only go to work to get a paycheque by the end of the month and the reason for that is because the majority of police officers come from other provinces and they don’t care about what happens in the township,” he said.

Some residents raised concerns about police vehicles that were always spotted in places where it is alleged that drugs were sold.

Ward 105 councillor Tefo Raphadu raised the issue of resources at the local police station and urged police management to help with enough resources. Station commander for the Alexandra Police Station Colonel Johannes Tau said they would attend to all queries and grievances raised by community members during Imbizo.

Mashe also appealed to all the community members with unresolved cases to send their case numbers directly to him or the Alexandra Police Station commander.
