‘Put your house in order’

MARLBORO– Health and Social Development MMC Mpho Phalatse urged principals to put their houses in order.

The MMC of Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg Mpho Phalatse said health and occupational safety remained a major problem in most of day care centres.

Phalatse was speaking during the graduation ceremony of Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners held in Marlboro Community Hall on 5 August this year.

She urged all practitioners to ensure that their facilities meet health and safety requirements to avoid being shut down. She said inspectors in her department were paying unannounced visits to day care centres across the city to ensure children’s safety.

She also informed practitioners and principals of different facilities who attended that early childhood will move from the department of social development to the department of basic education.

“Two children died in one of the facilities in Westdene after they allegedly ate something at school. The forensic pathology report showed that both children who were attending the same school died from organophosphate poisoning. There is another case that was opened the SAPS in Sophiatown and we are trying to find out what has really happened there,” Phalatse said.

She urged the management and staff members of these facilities to priorities health and safety and put their houses in order.

“I urge all of you to priorities safety of our children in your facilities and please put your house in order because we will pay you a surprise visit. If we find your house is not in order we will be forced to shut down your facility.”
