Police urge members of the public to go with someone when selling or buying products online

ALEXANDRA– Online business transaction went wrong as potential car buyers hijack the seller in a local mall.

The police have urged community members to be vigilant and ask someone to accompany them when meeting potential online products buyers and sellers.

This was after a male complainant became the latest victim of hijacking when an online potential buyer hijacked his car on 2 August.

According to the Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatjie, the buyer and seller of the car communicated and agreed on a R70 000 price tag.

“The complainant advertised his Audi hatchback online. On 2 August, he received a call from someone who was interested in the car but who could not come personally to view the car due to work commitments. He then sent two men he claimed were his sons to view the car and buy it if it was in good condition.

“Arrangements were made, the seller and buyer’s messengers met in a local mall where the transaction was to be completed. It is alleged that the EFT on a cellphone was made but could not be accomplished and messengers went to the ATM to get cash. Upon their return from the ATM, they entered the car and cocked a gun forcing the seller out of the car.”

Malatjie said the car was later found stripped in Pretoria and a case of car hijacking was opened with the police.
