The City of Johannesburg has released information on the arrest of two male suspects aged 23 and 24 who were arrested on 27 July for possession of stolen cables worth R100 000.
Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba said in a statement that the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) received a tip-off on 26 July about stolen copper cables, “[They] were stolen at a certain scrapyard situated at 1 st Avenue and London Road in Alexandra. The GFIS team and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) then went to search the scrapyard but found nothing.”
Mashaba detailed that the informant later told GFIS officials exactly where the stolen copper cables were stored at the scrapyard. The team went again to the location found nothing again but decided to look in bedrooms where they found two bags stuffed with stolen copper cables.
The suspects will appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
The mayor added that to combat syndicates such as these a new specialised JMPD unit was introduced to fight against crime such as cable theft by having a professional and dedicated unit approach with the skills and knowledge to do so.
