MMC De Jager hands over chemical toilets in Alexandra

ALEXANDRA – MMC de Jager delivered chemical toilets in Alexandra.

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager together with the management of Johannesburg Water delivered chemical toilets to residents of Stjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra whose houses were demolished by the Red Ants.

The MMC said their mandate was to give people the dignity they deserve.

“It’s about giving people dignity. People should not be living here without toilets. People should not have to walk all the way to Stjwetla to use a toilet,” said De Jager.

He added that no permanent services would be delivered to the area as it needed to be formalised first.

“We will continue to provide basic services that are not of a permanent nature. I cannot, for instance, come here and electrify an informal settlement without housing. That I can not do. But it is in my power to request Joburg Water to assist where they can.”

He further said his office’s responsibility was to take care of the environment.

“When we talk about the environment, we talk about taking care of the rivers. We talk about taking care of the Jukskei River specifically in this case.

“If people can not do their business in the toilet where will they be doing it? In the river. They will do it in the plastic bag and throw it in the river. That is an unfortunate reality of the truth that we are sitting within South Africa.”
