City conducts a safety awareness campaign in Stjwetla

MARLBORO – The City of Johannesburg in Region E visited the community of Greenville informal settlement to educate residents about health hazards and safety.

The City of Johannesburg in Region E visited the community of Greenville informal settlement in Stjwetla to educate residents about health hazards, dangers of building under power pylons, illegal dumping and staying on the servitude.

The area, which recently suffered a fire disaster that swept away hundreds of shacks and leaving scores of people without homes, remains a concern to the City.

Deputy director of Citizen Relationship and Urban Management in City’s Region E, Fofo Pooe, said it was their duty as a municipality to educate residents about the dangers of living in areas like Green Village informal settlement. “We came here to educate our people about building under power pylons, fire safety and health-related issues. We brought with us Eskom and City Power who will teach residents about safety and dangers of staying under pylons.

“We also brought health, EMS and disaster management departments to provide basic health needs like HIV tests, blood pressure and diabetes tests. We are conducting a door-to-door campaign to empower our residents with much-needed information on how to stay safe from disasters that frequently strike the area.”

Kgabo Raphara, a member of the ward committee responsible for housing portfolio in Ward 109 said education drives and awareness campaigns were extremely needed to keep communities like Greenville who often suffer fire and flood disasters informed.

He urged the City of Johannesburg to continue conducting education and awareness sessions in the community.
