Residents of Far East Bank spend days in the dark due to power outages

ALEXANDRA – According to City Power, technicians had to instal the power generator after the new transformer could not work due to technical issues.

The community of Far East Bank in Alexandra has threatened to burn City Power‘s generator after they spent almost a week in the dark.

This was after the area was struck by a power outage after the power transformer had apparently stopped working at around 9 pm on 27 June this year.

Residents said they had to endure cold nights in the dark while the City of Johannesburg’s power utility City Power was working on-site trying to replace the power transformer on the corner of Phil Ziqubu Street and Lenin Drive.

Community member Khubu Hlongwane who has been liaising with City Power since the first day of the outage said they have missed all Afcon tournament actions and went to bed without food because of power outages in the area.

“We’ve been without electricity for nine days now. They came here with a new transformer and took it back. They brought a generator which goes off every day at six o’ clock in the evenings.”

“We don’t want this generator anymore, they must fix the transformer. If they continue like this we will burn this generator because that’s the only language they understand.”

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the utility’s technicians had to install the power generator after a new transformer that was brought to replace the old one could not work due to technical issues which they hope to sort out as soon as possible.
