Broken infrastructure in Three Square poses danger to local skateboarders

ALEXANDRA – 'I've been skating here from the age of seven and now I'm told to go play somewhere else'.

A group of young local skateboarders has appealed to the City of Johannesburg and the local business community to help them raise funds to fix Skateboard Park in Three Square Sports Complex in Alexandra.

According to the young skateboarders, Bongani Jones (16), Kamogelo Mokubung (14), Thabiso Mukubung (12), Junior Ntelane (13), Noko Makololo (14) and Thabang Magarefetsa (15), they were tired of being turned away by the facility’s officer when they want to access the park and play.

They explained that they have asked the facility officer to help them fix the park but never received a positive feedback from the City.

“I’ve been skating here from the age of seven and now I’m told to go play somewhere else because the park is no longer safe to be used. Where must I go because there is no alternative skateboard park around Alex,” Bongani asked.

“I travel from Hofmeyer Street every day to come and play here. We are appealing to the authorities to do something regarding this matter.”

He said skating was what keeps them busy and it’s the only sport that they like and which appeals to them.

The deputy director at the Department of Citizen Relationship and Urban Management in the City’s Region E, Fofo Pooe, said the matter has been reported to the City’s Department of Sports and Recreation and something will be done to resolve the matter of broken and ageing infrastructure at the facility.
