Jailbird at it again

ALEXANDRA – Phone helps nab parolee in hijacked car.

A victim’s cell phone has helped to trace a motor vehicle hijacker who re-offended while on parole.

Bandile Simelane was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 10 July for the crime committed late afternoon on 6 June. He and three others, who are still at large, pounced on a motorist who had stopped to drop someone off at the Vincent Tshabalala Road and 12th Avenue intersection. They forced the victim out of the vehicle at gunpoint, took the keys and searched him. They took his wallet and cell phone and drove away, leaving the victim stranded.

The Alexandra Police Station and the victim’s friend who was elsewhere were alerted of the incident. The friend traced the phone’s location. Police then tracked and spotted the vehicle parked in the driveway of an 18th Avenue home.

The accused’s accomplices fled when they saw the police and he was arrested while still in the driver’s seat of the hijacked vehicle.
