Residents want motorists to obey road signs

ALEXANDRA– Mandla Msibi said six children were knocked down by different vehicles last month and suffered critical injuries because of motorists who do not respect the rules of the road.

The residents of Ward 105 in Tsutsumani, Alexandra, blockaded the busy Lenin Drive with rocks and rubble as they embarked on service delivery protest on 11 June.

The protesting residents, who were joined by scores of children from local schools, were demanding that the City of Johannesburg install speed humps on the corner of Lenin Drive and Thoko Mngoma Street.

Community leader and secretary of the service delivery committee in the area Mandla Msibi said six children were knocked down by different vehicles last month and suffered critical injuries because of motorists who do not adhere to the rules of the road.

“This thing of children and elderly people being killed by motorists who don’t respect road signs must come to an end. We did a petition earlier this year asking the City to install speed humps on this intersection and we took it to Metro centre where it was registered and we were provided with a reference number.

“All we want from the City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Roads Agency is the safety of pedestrians and that of our school children who cross this intersection every day,” Msibi said.

The protesters and schoolchildren dispersed peacefully after community leaders and local councilor Tefo Raphadu engaged with JMPD officials, and the road was cleared.

Utility spokesperson of the Johannesburg Roads Agency was unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
