Founder and the first principal of Boitumelong Early Childhood Learning Centre passes on

ALEXANDRA – According to her daughter, Mkhize loved teaching and taking care of children. It wasn't just a job or a way of making a living, but a calling.


The community of Alexandra and the Mkhize family mourn the passing of 69-year-old community educator Nomthandazo Marjorie Mkhize, also known as Gogo principal.

Mkhize, who was the founder and principal of Boitumelong Early Childhood Learning Centre, died on 5 June after a long illness. She started the centre in a shack in which she lived in 1983, and moved to a brick house in 6th Avenue in 1997.

According to her daughter and current principal at the learning centre Nokulunga Ncube, her mother loved teaching and believed in education.

“My mother loved taking care of children. It wasn’t just a job or a way of a making a living for her, but a calling that she pursued her entire life.”

Mkhize, who is survived by her five children and 13 grandchildren, will be laid to rest in Waterfall Cemetery in Midrand on 16 June after a church service that will be held in Marlborough Community Hall from 9am to 12 pm.
