Neighbours save 80-year-old granny and her grandson from the flames of fire

ALEXANDRA– Agnes said she lost almost everything during the fire incident, her ID and Sassa card.

80-year-old Agnes Motswi and her grandson, Thabo Motswi, who live in 15th Avenue in Alexandra escaped death when the raging flames of a fire engulfed their house in the early hours of 3 June.

Agnes, who can’t walk and is still mourning the death of her daughter who was taking care of her, said their escape from the flames was miraculous.

“I was sleeping when I heard people shouting outside, saying the house was on fire. I crawled out of my bed with a few items and with the help of my neighbours who came to our rescue. My grandson Thabo was also sleeping when the fire, that is suspected to have started in his room, broke out,” Agnes said.

“My ID, my Sassa card, my fridge and other valuables were destroyed. I don’t know how I will get my grant because I cannot walk to the Home Affairs offices by myself.”

Busisiwe Radebe, one of the neighbours who came to the rescue of the family, said she saw the flames of the fire coming through the window of one of the rooms. Radebe said she jumped out and began calling.

“When we arrived, Gogo and Thabo were sleeping and we started using water with buckets to extinguish the fire while waiting for municipal fire engines, who later came and helped us overcome the flames.”

Ward 76 councillor in the City Of Johannesburg Moses Phandeka said his office and social workers were in the process of helping Agnes apply for a new ID and Sassa card.
