19-year-old cedes his rights for phone robbery

ALEXANDRA – A youth has been arrested for stealing.

 


A teenager found guilty of the robbery of a cell phone was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

This is after he confirmed his legal representative, and pending further investigation.

The 19-year-old, who has a previous withdrawn case of sexual assault at Lenasia Magistrates’ Court, appeared in the dock with a bandaged head resulting from a beating at the incident, which occurred at night on 7 June.

The accused, who was with two others who are at large, grabbed a cell phone from a male victim who was talking to someone while walking between 17th and 18th avenues. As the suspects fled, the victim grabbed the accused and a tussle ensued. The accused drew out a knife and tried to stab the victim but missed.

The victim then screamed, attracting members of the public who apprehended the suspect and inflicted mob justice, before handing him over to the police called to the scene.

The stolen phone was also found on him.
