Round two: Alex Total Shutdown to commence on Wednesday

ALEX – The total shutdown planned for 19 June is reportedly about the issues of illegal structures around the community.

The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has confirmed that there are Alex Total Shutdown protests planned for 19 June.

The mayor said this in a statement released on the City’s website. The organisers of the protest action started the movement a few months ago in April, protesting against poor service delivery, housing and crime affecting the Alexandra community.

The recent announcement of the shutdown is in response to the demolitions of ‘illegal structures’ which left many residents homeless along the Jukskei River which was carried out by the Red Ants and Metro police.

The planned total shutdown on 19 June is reportedly about the issue of illegal structures.

At the time, Mashaba said he was unaware of the planned demolition and who authorised the operation on 31 May. “I always ask to be informed because politically I have to take full responsibility for what is happening. I was really disappointed that my office was not contacted about this.”

The mayor then said an independent investigation into the process of the demolitions will be initiated by the City manager, Dr Ndivho Lukhwareni.
