Do you know of Grade 6 learners, no older than 12, who achieve marks of 70 per cent and above in maths, science and English and come from low-income homes?

The Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) is on the lookout for children who match this criteria to award them a five-year scholarship to attend one of their 25 partner schools in the country.

The programme’s 28 matric scholars of 2018 brought home 71 distinctions in the IEB and NSC examinations, compared to a total of 52 for 2017. The programme’s top IEC matriculant, Rockville’s Katlego Mahlo, studied at St Mary’s School, Waverley and earned eight distinctions. She now studies BSc in actuarial science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) along with top NSC matriculant, Travis Bartosch from Selborne College took home four distinctions, who is studying a general BSc at the same university.

As a non-profit trust, the Student Sponsorship Programme has awarded over 1 500 academic scholarships since 2000 to deserving scholars to attend top independent and public high schools in South Africa – including the American International School of Johannesburg, St. John’s College, Kingsmead College, Clarendon High School for Girls and Pretoria Boys High School. The scholarships given to date are valued at more than R150 million, to attend schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Makhanda and East London.

Besides academic prowess, the applicants should be active in sport, engaged in the community and display leadership potential. To qualify to apply for the scholarship programme, the combined household income must not exceed R20 000 per month.

The 10-month recruitment process includes an entrance exam, interviews with the parents and guardians and tests to assess intellectual quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ) and a camp to assess peer interaction.

The programme aims to nurture future leaders with this five-year scholarship which includes tuition, school uniforms and much more. The support given is not only academic and psycho-social but also included mentorship and parental support. Orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are offered additional assistance.
