Tiger makes it three out of four for the Map Games 2019

ALEXANDRA -– Three out of four Alex Royal Tigers teams make it to the finals of the Map Games 2019.

Three of the four divisional teams of the Alex Royal Tigers have made history by reaching the finals of the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games (Map Games) to be played on 16 June at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

The club achieved a milestone by having all four divisions reach the semi-finals of this prestigious development tournament founded and run by former Alex top player, coach, club owner and now business tycoon, Maimane Alfred Phiri.

Phiri used to play for Ajax Cape Town before moving to Moroka Swallows and eventually packing his bags for Turkey where he played for two clubs in that country.

Tigers owner Thembinkosi ‘Tiger’ Matholengwe said he had wished to make it 100 per cent of his teams in the finals but was still grateful that three managed to make it.

Asked what happened in the U15 division, which is considered as his strongest team among the four divisions, Matholengwe was adamant they should have won their semi-final in normal time and not gone into penalties and then a sudden death shootout.

“It was God’s will and who are we to try and challenge that. I am happy that it shows the growth of the club as we started in the Map Games with one team, grew to two teams and now it’s three. I hope to make it four out of four next year,” he said.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed that we again achieve another milestone by winning all the divisional finals that we have qualified for, and make it a first for the Map Games,” said the soft-spoken Tiger, one of the youngest club owners in the history of Alex football following on the footsteps of the Iron Duke, Dr Irvin Khoza, now chairman of the Premier Soccer League and Orlando Pirates FC.
