JRA head of planning suspended for misconduct, resigns

JOBURG – The official was alleged to have initiated contact with a potential service provider who wanted to receive kickbacks.

The City of Johannesburg MMC for Transport, councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba said she was aware of the resignation of Joburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) head of planning effective from 4 June.

The official had been suspended due to allegedly being in a corrupt relationship with a potential service provider. The suspension came into effect in March.

Makbuba said the suspension was to allow for further investigations into the alleged misconduct.

“The official is alleged to have initiated contact with a potential service provider and subsequently had a meeting with the service provider, during which they proposed to allocate three work contracts on the condition that they are paid kickbacks of approximately 30 per cent of the revenue generated from JRA contracts. ”

Makhuba alleged that the official and the contractor also had discussed the inflation of work hours on invoices to cater for the kickbacks that were expected to be paid. “It is further alleged that the official divulged strictly confidential information to the potential service provider.”

The resignation by the official has prevented an internal disciplinary hearing from taking place and the matter was reported to police authorities for further investigations.
