Love and passion for fashion industry is a secret behind the success of Gulexy Creations

ALEXANDRA – The 28-year-old Letswalo partnered with her late mother in May 2015 to start Gulexy Creations.

Local entrepreneur, fashion designer and co-founder of Gulexy Creations Fashion Company, Mokgadi Letswalo, said she was gunning for a broader international market after her company successfully exported some of its first products oversees early this year.

The 28-year-old Letswalo partnered with her late mother in May 2015 to start Gulexy Creations and she prides herself in producing world-class African clothes.

“I was born a fashion designer, this was not something I opted for because I was desperate for a job or money. My mother and I would fight every time she bought me something because I would cut it and change so that it fit my style.”

The partnership came about after she decided to no longer work as a freelance journalist writing for media companies in order to pursue her ‘calling’.

“In 2015, I told my mother that I was quitting my job as a freelance journalist to start my own fashion company. She gave me the green light and we partnered to start Gulexy Creations.

“She was the one running the sewing department and staff management while I was more into sales and marketing of our products.”

Letswalo said the passing of her mother last year left a huge void in the business and in her life which made things difficult. “My mother’s passing a last year left a gap in our business and in my personal life. She was a pillar and a role model to me.”

She also said that she plans to start an entrepreneurial education campaign to teach local youngsters about the significance of small businesses. “One of the challenges we went through in the business was human resource issues. People don’t understand how small businesses operate. They come to you and ask if they can work with you so that they get practical experience, however, as time goes on, you realise that they don’t have a passion for what he or she does but want to make money.”
