Former Alex FM presenters accuse the station of lying about their dismissal
BRAAMFONTEIN – Three former employees of the station say they were fired through WhatsApp messages earlier this year after they embarked on strike in July last year.
Three former Alex FM presenters have accused station management of misleading and lying to listeners about their dismissal at the community broadcasting corporation.
Mmatsatsi Mokoena, former 9–12 show presenter of The Real Deal, Sandra Masiteng, former central news host between 5–6am weekdays, and former station receptionist Koena Selemela said the station should stop telling listeners that they are on leave.
The three former employees said they were fired through WhatsApp messages earlier this year, after they embarked on a strike in July last year.
“We were targeted for being at the forefront of the strike last year, fighting for our rights as workers. Out of 26 staff members who participated in the strike, we were the only ones who got fired. The station management should stop misleading listeners by saying that we are on leave. The truth of the matter is that the three of us were fired and we are no longer part of the station,” said Masiteng.
Alex FM station manager Takalane Nemangowe confirmed that the trio parted ways with the station. He said that due processes were followed to terminate their contracts.
“When someone feels unfairly treated in an organisation, they must exhaust all available platforms to find closure on the matter. We, at Alex FM, have an internal process that advises when an employee does not find joy with a decision or position of the management. The matter can also be escalated to the board, which is a custodian of the licence. The board was not approached by anyone to date regarding this matter,” said Nemangowe.
