City responds to illegal demolition of structures in Alexandra

ALEXANDRA – Leader of executive business, Funzela Ngobeni responds to illegal demolition of structures in Alexandra.

The City of Johannesburg has responded to the demolition of structures in Alexandra on 31 May. The City said the demolition of illegal structures by the police and Red Ants was in the interest of public safety.

“The purpose of the operation was to remove illegal structures which had been constructed along the waterline within the area and which posed a safety risk,” said the City in the statement.

“Based on currently available information, it would appear that the operation may have been conducted without the requisite processes being followed.”

MMC for Finance and leader of executive business Funzela Ngobeni said the City has ordered a full investigation to determine who authorised the operation and whether the operation was conducted within the scope of the law. “The City is in the process of ensuring that those affected by this operation are provided with relief to safeguard their well-being.

“As a City, we seek to protect the well-being of all residents. The fact that such an incident has occurred is deeply regretful and those responsible will held to account.”

Ngobeni added that they have received unconfirmed reports of the death of a child, which allegedly took place during the operation. “The City is working closely with law enforcement authorities to confirm these reports and engaged the affected families.”
